John Twinning was born in Birmingham in 1961. He showed an interest in the visual arts from an early age. In 1983 John gained a BA in Visual Communications Studies at West Midlands College of Higher Education. The course consisted of practical work in several creative fields including photography, graphic design, video and audio visual production. In his graduating year, John's photographs won first prize in a competition organised by The Observer and Christian Aid which was open to all professional UK photographers.
After College, John worked for a number of years as a freelance journal photographer and graphic designer.
In September 2008, John's painting ‘Low Tide' was exhibited and sold at the Royal Watercolour Society/Sunday Times Watercolour Exhibition at the Bankside Galleries on London's South Bank.
John previously sold his painting of ‘Lichfield Cathedral' in 1997 at the prestigious Singer & Friedlander/Sunday Times Watercolour Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. He has also sold work at the Friends of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists Open Exhibition; as well as other galleries in the Midlands and East Anglia.
John's medium of choice for the vast majority of work he undertakes is gouache on paper. Pencil drawings also feature strongly.
