You might have known or heard of the Kuala Lumpur flood on 10th June 2007. St
Mary's Cathedral was under 4 - 5 feet of water. It is so sad that all
the newly renovated Cathedral and the newly installed furniture was
destroyed. The computers, Amplifier, cupboards, shelves, tables,
chairs, Bibles, hymn books, pianos, office files, stationery, books in
the Cathedral bookshop, etc were destroyed and discarded. It happened just after Evensong when everyone has left the church at about 8.00pm. The water from Sg. Gombak overflowed its bank and the water rose very quickly. The whole of Dataran Merdeka and its car park were under water. Many parts of KL were flooded too. There was a massive traffic jam. The next day after the water receded, a layer of mud of nearly 1 foot was left behind on the grounds inside and outside. The 100 years old big tree just in front of the Cathedral too fell and one car was crushed. The fence was partly destroyed. It is a real mess. It took many workers (employed) to clear the mud and the debris. The insurance adjuster came and couldn't do anything because of the mess. It took days to clear the mess. Although the church is insured against flood, the insurance is usually unable to replace the damaged items with new ones. The loss is great. I therefore urge you to pray and donate to the Cathedral restoration fund to restore the Cathedral urgently. Thank you, Shalom, +Moon Hing. The Revd Preb Michael Sheard adds: ‘If anyone wishes to make a donation it will be easier, cheaper and safer for us to arrange to send it through the channels we normally use when transferring funds to Malaysia. If you wish me to arrange this then please do not make cheques out to St Mary's Cathedral, but to LDBF, marked on the reverse St Mary's KL Appeal.’
