Friday 27th October marked the 60th anniversary of the dedication of the Cathedral bells which were cast in 1947 to mark the 750th anniversary of the Cathedral. This work was paid for in full by the Freemasons of Staffordshire and the tenor bell, (the largest) has an inscription to record this. Last Saturday over 40 past and present ringers came to Lichfield to celebrate this anniversary, travelling from as far away as Devon, Kent and Yorkshire. During the afternoon two quarter peals were successfully rung followed by general ringing which preceded a special Evensong when the choir and clergy processed to the sound of change ringing on handbells. After Evensong the ringers, joined by our Canon Treasurer Chris Liley, and his wife Elaine, moved to College Hall where a splendid hot buffet meal was enjoyed by all. Some of the visitors then returned home but some stayed over and joined the present Local Band on Sunday morning. Our thanks go to Lucy Smith and her Committee for organizing a most enjoyable weekend. |
