It's what's inside that counts!
It is business as usual at Lichfield Cathedral - despite a new appearance this week. Following the launch of Lichfield Inspires by Royal Patron, His Royal Highness, the Duke of Gloucester on 30th April of this year, contractors move-in this week to commence work on this ‘once-in-a-century’ project.
Scaffolding, hoardings, work compounds and a viewing platform will start to be erected from Wednesday 28th May, which will of course mean a drastic alteration to the building's external appearance. Despite this, visitors can expect very little disruption during a visit to the Cathedral and should not be deterred from exploring this national treasure during the summer months.
Chief Officer, Timothy Pain, commented:
All visitors during the coming months can expect the usual warm Lichfield Cathedral welcome and we will keep disruption to a minimum during the start of this very exciting project. For the next eighteen months, the careful restoration and renovation work will focus on external aspects of the Cathedral, therefore enabling everyone to worship, explore and enjoy the Cathedral in peace.
Tim Pain welcomed Robert Kilgour (the Lichfield Inspires Superintendent Architect) and Martyn Phillips (the Contract Manager of Croft Conservation) as work commenced at the Cathedral.
Daily Cathedral tours will continue to run at 2pm daily (1.30pm on Sundays). Please note that these tours are subject to availability. The tours are free of charge and can be joined simply by meeting a Cathedral tour guide at the Welcome Desk, located at the West End entrance. To ensure a tour is running, please check with a Welcomer at the main entrance, or contact the Cathedral before you make your journey.
