What is the Lichfield Centre for Christian Studies?

LCCS is a new partnership between Lichfield Cathedral, the Diocese of Lichfield and Staffordshire University, providing a fully accredited MA course in Christian Studies, plus other educational opportunities including Lecture Days.  A memorandum of understanding was signed to bring the partnership into being on Monday 31 October 2007, by the Bishop of Lichfield, the Dean of Lichfield and the Vice Chancellor of Staffordshire University.

What is the aim of the LCCS MA course?

The primary aim is to equip clergy for the challenges of incumbency in a changing church and world.  The title of the MA is ‘Theology, Context and the Pastoral Imagination’.  There will be modules in Doctrine, Biblical Hermeneutics, Leadership, Literature and Christian Spirituality and Mission.

Is enrolment only open to clergy?

No.  Although the course has been designed with the needs, challenges and perspecitves of clergy especially in mind, it is open to all.  Applications for enrolment from lay people are most welcome.

How will teaching and learning take place?

There will be an August summer school in years one and two, at which the Doctrine, Leadeship and Literature and Spirituality modules will be delivered.  The Mission and Biblical Hermenentics modules will be delivered on Wednesdays, in two semesters: one before Christmas each academic year and one afterwards.  There will be no tutor-student contact demands in Advent or Lent, or in mid summer.

What will the MA cost?

The full cost of the MA is to be £4500, or £1500 per annum.  However, in the case of those who are licensed clergy or lay ministers in the Lichfield Diocese, a 'Learning Resource Grant' of £400 per annum will be available as a subsidy.

Can I apply for grant funding to help meet the cost?

Each student will undoubtedly have to find some personal contribution towards the costs of the MA, but every assistance will be offered in identifying other funding sources, including educational grants.
