Lichfield Cathedral runs an extensive programme of Lifelong Learning under the leadership of the Outreach and Education Advisory Group, which is responsible to Chapter, through the Canon Chancellor, for this part of the Cathedral's mission.

The Cathedral is the holder of the prestigious Sandford Award for Heritage Education, gaining this first in 1991, with renewals for continued improvement in 1996 and again in 2002.

Our educational resources include:

Visiting Lichfield Cathedral - A Handbook for Teachers (£5.00)
A comprehensive reference book, ideal for answering those awkward questions! It details history, architecture, artefacts and characters of Lichfield Cathedral, past and present.

Key Stage One: The Young Pilgrims' Guide is a cross-curricular booklet exploring the Cathedral which focuses attention during a visit on objects to find, drawing activities and questions for discussion.

Key Stage One: The Animal Trail Did you know that the Cathedral houses dozens of animals? There are lots of lions a web-footed eagle and even a dragon! Come and see them and discover why they are here!

Key Stage One: Lest We Forget A resource pack with enjoyable, educational activities, linked to the theme of Remembrance Day; thought-provoking for children and adults alike.

Other activities and tours for the young include: Places of Worship, Glittering Glass, Tile Making and Brass Rubbing.

Key Stage Two Resource packs containing background information for teachers, pupil activities and ideas for games and discussion are available for the study of:

  • Anglo-Saxons (History Unit 6B)
  • Saint Chad (History Unit 20)
  • Tudor Life (History Unit 7/8)
  • Victorian Art and Design (History Unit 12)
we also offer:
  • Civil War Experience/Local History (Link History Unit 18)
    • A unique opportunity to relive the battles in Lichfield during the Civil War, when the Close and Cathedral were under siege three times, between 1643 and 1646. In role, climb the roof to spot the enemy, survey your defences, imagine you are a sniper, blow up the walls and surrender- all in a few hours. (Parts of this experience are only suitable for able-bodied pupils)

Special Educational Needs: In collaboration with Queen's Croft School (Lichfield) and Staffordshire LEA, we have produced a range of RE resources for pupils who experience difficulties with learning.

Our teacher resource pack, Working with SEN Pupils, enhances pupil learning prior to and after the visit as well. The units in the pack include: Responding to God, Symbolism, Responding to Nature. They are intended for SEN pupils at KS3/4, but may also be appropriate for younger visitors.

All visits to Lichfield Cathedral are supported by our experienced guides. The Visitors Study Centre is available to all school parties and is suitable for wheelchair users. Modified toilet facilities are also on site.

We would be very pleased to discuss your requirements. Please contact the Visits Officer for more information.

All Key Stages: Visiting Lichfield Cathedral for RE is a resource pack for teachers for RE studies at all ages, includes SEN units, above.
