What is a Christian?what_is_a_christian

A Christian is a follower of Jesus Christ: a ‘Christ-one’.

In the four New Testament Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John), a key aspect of the public ministry of Jesus is the way that he went about calling people to become his ‘disciples’ or learners.  These people are reported as ‘leaving everything to follow him’.  The first Christians were known, within a few years of Jesus’ death and resurrection, as ‘followers of the Way’.

Christians today are those who have heard the call of Jesus and are consciously responding to it.  Christians intentionally try to live in Christ’s Way, as part of his community, the Church.

Christians are usually recognised by:

what they believe:

Christians trust that the living God loves us and has made his love known to us in Jesus, by the power of his Spirit; we believe that the kingdom of God is coming, when every wrong will be put right and every hurt healed.

What they do:

Christians draw strength to serve God by meeting together to pray, worship, read the Bible and share in bread and wine as Jesus commanded; we seek to serve God in the world.

How they live:

Christians try to allow the teaching of Jesus to shape their lifestyle, by living out lives of love and humility; because this is hard to do, we rely daily on the forgiveness of God and of our neighbours.
