Phase 2Second phase of Lichfield InSpires begins as local masonry contractors are appointed

The second phase of Lichfield InSpires began today at Lichfield Cathedral and sees Aldridge based masonry contractor, Midlands Conservation Limited, appointed on the project.

Following the completion of Phase 1 of the project on the South Clerestory, completed in January of this year, Phase 2 will now being on the north side, with work being completed to mirror the masonry of Phase 1.

The Lichfield InSpires project was launched by the Duke of Gloucester on 30 April last year and Phase 2 will restore the upper levels of the Cathedral north side. This will involve scaffolding, hoardings, work compounds and a viewing platform being erected. Access to the Cathedral will not be limited by the work by this phase and local residents and visitors will be able to enjoy the full beauty and wonder of this incredible landmark during the majority of 2008. The stone masons' work area will remain on the south side for visitors to enjoy masonry demonstrations throughout the summer months.

The Very Rev'd Adrian Dorber, Dean of Lichfield commented:

The next phase of repairs to the Cathedral is crucial and will maintain the building's structural integrity. If we had not begun this work we would be compromising the Cathedral's future. We are very grateful indeed to the Wolfson Foundation and to English Heritage for giving the Cathedral nearly £250,000 towards this vital project. Last year, when we were working on the South side, people were fascinated to see the stone masons at work. We hope our visitors will be just as interested in this year's programme of stone repairs.

Andrew Cornwell, Director of the Midlands Conservation Limited said of the development:

Midland Conservation Limited is delighted to have been appointed as the main contractor for the masonry repairs on the project and look forward to working with the Cathedral and its staff and forming a strong relationship with the Cathedral.

Midland Conservation Limited was formed by Andrew in 2007 with fellow Director Jason Graham and the company have completed a series of mainly conservation and restoration projects. These have included projects for English Heritage and the National Trust.

The third phase of the project will begin in the summer, which will involve work on the Lady Chapel itself (including the nine great 16th century windows).
